Like you I too was kind of scared of them, often watching people with some amusement as they wandered into new age shops or Oxfam Stores and holding one precariously in their hand as they "wacked" them with the striker gleefully. I always understood these bowls as something sacred, but not really sure how or why they were used so kept an arms distance. Eventually I went into my local supplier and having decided on my size preference spent about an hour gently striking and rubbing various bowls until the right one chose me.
